Starting Medicare can bring a lot of questions. Understanding the basics, important enrollment periods, and the choices available to you can make the process easier. We’re here to help you understand what to consider as you get started.

What You Need to Know

Medicare is a federal health insurance program generally available to people age 65 or older, as well as certain younger people with disabilities or specific medical conditions. Medicare is divided into different parts, and each part helps cover different types of healthcare services.

Understanding Medicare

Part B – Medical Insurance

Medicare Part B helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, durable medical equipment, and many preventive services.

Part C – Medicare Advantage

Medicare Part C, also called Medicare Advantage, is an alternative way to receive your Medicare coverage through Medicare-approved private insurance companies. These plans include Part A and Part B benefits, and most also include Part D prescription drug coverage. Some plans offer additional benefits.

Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage

Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of prescription medications. Part D coverage is offered through Medicare-approved private insurance companies. If you choose Original Medicare, you can enroll in a separate Part D prescription drug plan. Most Medicare Advantage plans also include prescription drug coverage.
